Being a great boss is not easy. There are a lot of points to consider. The fact that you’re looking into the subject probably means you’re on the right track. Implementing all the advice can be a little overwhelming. To get started, we are keeping it to 9 simple qualities.

Great bosses:

1. Empower their employees

A great boss knows when to hand over power and responsibility to their employees. This is not a sign of weakness or passing the buck, it is simply providing employees with the chance to show their skills and to have pride.

While there is often a need to work as a team, some people will care more when there is a personal element to their work. Great bosses recognise this and delegate accordingly, allowing staff members the chance to shine.

Every employee should feel that their role is integral to the overall success of a firm or campaign.

2. Lay out clear expectations

Objectives cannot be achieved unless everyone in the workforce knows what is expected of them. What they can or cannot do is very important to their own success and that of the company. At times, the direction and goals will change. A great boss will ensure that all changes are clearly communicated before they are implemented.

3. Provide meaningful objectives

Some employees are more competitive than others. This means that targets – and the allocation of the work – have to be set out accordingly. Targets have to mean something. Depending on the employee’s core drives, goals either have to be team-oriented or speak to their individual competitive nature.

They have to be achievable and they should give a person a sense of satisfaction for having completed them. The small achievements make working life worthwhile. This is where setting meaningful and tailored objectives can drive employees.

4. Listen to employees

As they are the ones engaging with the processes, some employees are likely to have their own ideas around improving the way in which things are done. If these employees are motivated, the ideas will continue to flow.

If these employees feel ignored and are unhappy, the ideas are likely to dry up. They apply a discretionary effort at work or leave, and the company may miss out on an improved overall performance driven by innovation.

A great boss will actively seek suggestions from employees, creating an environment where input can come from all angles.

5. Create connections

Working should be about more than just getting paid. Of course, we all want to get paid, but employees want to feel that they are part of a team working towards a common goal. They want to feel recognised. They want to be seen.

A great boss treats their employees like people. A quick question about family life or asking how the weekend went gives an employee a much stronger connection to you and the rest of the workforce.

6. Are consistent

Employees like to know where they stand with their leader. There is nothing worse than not knowing which version of a boss will walk in the room from one day to the next.

A great boss will be aware of their own workplace behaviour and the effect that might have on others. They will ensure that they treat every employee as fairly as possible – every day. It is important to see employees as individuals, but there can absolutely be no favourites or scapegoats.

A great boss will react to issues in a consistent manner, regardless of who the employee is.

7. Criticise in private

Some bosses feel that they need lay down a marker to prevent other people from acting in an undesirable manner. They therefore issue public criticism. If the recipient of this treatment is naturally worried about getting things wrong, this can destroy their confidence. It can affect their performance and that of the entire team.

A great boss will provide constructive criticism in private while offering the chance and a path for improvement. They clarify what is expected from an employee.

8. Praise in public

If someone does something well, be sure to praise them. Even better, you could try to praise them in front of their peers. That is if their outgoing nature is likely to lap this approach up. This will make an employee feel good about themselves whilst raising the bar for the rest of the workforce. If the employee is more introspective a private message of recognition or a voucher might work well.

9. Offer a future

Most employees want to know that they have career opportunities at your organisation. Great bosses work closely with their employees to provide hope and a clear path of progression. Whether it’s by recommending training or pointing out ways in which people can develop their skills, offering a future is crucial to keeping employees engaged.
