A great boss knows when to hand over power and responsibility to employees. Great bosses recognise this and delegate accordingly, allowing staff members the chance to shine. Every employee should know that their role is integral to the overall success of a firm or campaign.

Ensuring that everyone in the workforce knows what is expected of them and what they can or cannot do is very important. At times, orders and directions will change, so a great boss will ensure that all changes are clearly communicated before they are implemented.

The competitive nature of people means that targets are important; however, the targets have to mean something. They have to be achievable and they should give a person a sense of satisfaction for having completed them. Working should be about more than just getting paid. Of course, we all want to get paid, but employees want to feel as though they are part of a team and that they are recognised. A quick question about family life or asking how the weekend went gives an employee a much stronger connection to you and the rest of the workforce.

Most employees like to know where they stand with their boss. There is nothing worse than not knowing which version of a boss will walk in the room from day to day. A great boss will react to issues in a consistent manner, regardless of who the employee is.

Some bosses feel as though they need to make their mark by criticising people in public, perhaps laying down a marker to prevent other people acting in the same manner. This can destroy the confidence of that employee and indeed the confidence of a team! A great boss will provide constructive criticism in private while offering the chance for improvement, or clarifying what is expected from an employee.
